Lola Rodríguez de Tió was a poet, an advocate for the abolition of slavery, the support of women's rights, and the independence of Puerto Rico from Spain, and she is a descendant of Ponce de León
Lola Rodríguez de Tió was born in 1843. Her father, Sebastian Rodriguez-De_Astudillo-Ramirez-Del_Postigo, is a founder of the Ilustre Colegio de Abogados de Puerto Rico ("Illustrious College of Attorneys," the governing body for Spanish attorneys in Puerto Rico, similar to a bar association) and her mother, Maria Del Carmen Ponce_De_Leon-Martinez is a descendant of Juan Ponce de León who was an explorer, and the first Spanish Governor of Puerto Rico.
She was the first Puerto Rican-born woman poet to establish a reputation as a great poet throughout all of Latin America. [1] A believer in women's rights, she was also committed to the abolition of slavery and the independence of Puerto Rico. Forthright in her opposition to Spanish rule, she boldly challenged the governmental authorities that resulted in her being exiled from Puerto Rico. [2]
In 1868, she wrote the original revolutionary lyrics to the Puerto Rican National Anthem La Borinquena. [3] She is a revered figure in both Cuban and Puerto Rican history. She is considered to be Puerto Rico's premier nineteenth century lyric poet and one of Latin America's most important early feminists.[4]
Lola Rodríguez de Tió died on November 10, 1924, and is buried at the Colón Cemetery in Havana, Cuba.
Her brothers: Francisco, Nicolas, and Lorene
